A word or two about the author
Gordan Orešić was born in 1973 in Zagreb, Croatia. In his elementary school days he decided to become a painter or artist of some sort. He has actually never had a choice. People are what they are.We don't choose our profession, it chooses us.
In 1988 he started the School for Applied Arts and Design in Zagreb. He chose the department of graphic technique and graphic design with which he wasn't thrilled in the end. Even then he felt closer to the way a painter would express his ideas and emotions. To this day he has nightmares caused by graphic design.
He continued his artistic education in 1993 at the department of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. He graduated in 1998 with honours and with his professors' endless tapping on the back. Very cute, but not in the least encouraging. Although the work, company and endless discussions about painting, art and the authenticity of artistic act with his elder collegues and the collegues in his class (Ceric, Žilic, Hudina) have been of great importance to him, he doesn't feel that the Academy itself has completely prepared him for the life of a painter and artist. He is aware of all the oversights of the educational system of the Academy and of the way it prepares young artists with the clash with the world. He is a member of HDLU (Croatian Society of Visual Artists).
He's been exhibiting his work since 1997, with shorter or longer pauses needed for the critical detachment from and evaluation of his work.
He likes to spend his spare time spearfishing or freediving, and he is troubled by the fact that he needs five-hour drive to get to the seaside. As an ex-archer he is active in the archery club Croatia as the coach of children and beginners, and as the private coach of his wife. He drives her completely mad with his fanatic attitude towards the sport. He calls it dedication. She thinks he's a crazy artist.
He has been neither awarded nor convicted for his work. So far.
